Julie’s passion for both food and art started at an early age, growing up baking with her mother and grandmother. She followed her interest in art and graduated with a BA in Fine Arts, and went on to be a technical illustrator, then a graphic and web designer.
She moved to Portugal in 1998 for a short-term job and has been there ever since. There, her career in design expanded into publishing, and for 12 years she was involved in various publications, including two of her own, People & Business and CasaTotal.
Owning her own business allowed her the flexibility to continue to be creative in the kitchen, not just in the office. On every occasion she has become known as the designated dessert person, sometimes fielding comments such as “Julie only eats desserts that she’s made” (it’s not true!). With so many friends and family always asking for cakes, she was inspired to take her hobby to the next level.
In January 2011 she received a diploma for the Wilton Master Course, in June 2011 she studied with Colette Peters and received a diploma in gum paste and fondant and again in 2012 for sculpted cakes. She has also received a diploma from PME. Wanting to share her passion with others, Julie’s Cakes, The Great American Cake and Os Bolos da Julie brings Julie’s unique artistic perspective to the growing world of cake design in Portugal.
Julie not only offers her clients personalized, custom designed American-style cakes, she also teaches courses for those who want to learn the art of cake decoration.
